We invite children from Birth to 12 years old to get “Reading RETRO!” with our vintage-themed crafts, story times, book discussions, explorations, music and movement programs, live animal shows and more!

The goal of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage children to read during the summer months, both to prevent skill loss and to foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime. This program is designed to make reading FUN, so that children will want to participate and read more. In addition, children who read during the summer are better prepared to meet the challenges of a new school year in the fall.

Children may register for the Summer Reading Program online through a link on the PJFL Children’s homepage (portjefflibrary.org/children) or in person at the Library starting Saturday, June 17. This summer, all reading will be recorded online through the Summer Reading website. If you prefer, you and your child can maintain a list of books read at home and bring it into the Library to be recorded online by our staff. As always, you can print out your online reading record at the end of the summer for personal or school use.

In person and online registration continues throughout the summer.  Prizes will be available on a bi-weekly basis. A child who has done the required amount of reading will earn a prize every other week. Raffle tickets for large raffle prizes will be distributed to those who have completed the weekly reading goal during alternating weeks.

The first day to record books and pick up prizes is Saturday, June 24. We reserve the right to substitute prizes as necessary. The last day to record your reading is Wednesday, August 16 and the program will end Thursday, August 17 with Jester Jim’s Juggling Show.

New readers, up to third grade, are invited to join the Magna Doodles. One prize or raffle ticket will be awarded weekly after 3 books are read.
